Design and Fabrication of Hot Cell Lighting Systems

Nuclear Systems Associates, Inc. (NSA) provides hot cell lighting systems engineering and design services and maintains a product line of hot cell light fixtures. NSA provided the engineering design of the remote lighting system for all hot cells in the Fuels and Materials Examination Facility at Hanford. In conjunction with Bechtel and DuPont, NSA designed, fabricated, tested and delivered over 100 remote light fixtures for the Defense Waste Processing Facility at the Savannah River Plant. NSA delivered a set of 20 heavy shielded light fixtures to Westinghouse Idaho Nuclear Co., Inc. (WINCO). NSA recently built and delivered 14 double and 3 single 1000-watt fixtures for installation at the Westinghouse Naval Reactors Facility / ECF Hot Cells in Idaho. NSA's remote lighting systems are currently being considered for all the major new hot cell facilities being designed or constructed in the U.S. and the Far East.

In addition, NSA has supplied more conventional lighting systems to the U.S. Air Force.

The RL2 is a versatile hot cell lighting system that is available with metal halide, mercury vapor or high pressure sodium lamps. Optional mounting configurations and required hardware can be provided. Your special mounting requirements can also be accommodated. Fixtures can be furnished with an emergency tungsten halogen quick starting lamp in addition to the main light source. Fixtures are available with splash proof glass or steel screen face.

The RL3 hot cell lighting fixture incorporates two 1000 watt high pressure sodium lamps that can be operated separately or together. The unit can be mounted directly to the hot cell wall, or integrated with your special mounting hardware and electrical connectors. Fixtures can be furnished with an emergency tungsten halogen quick starting lamp in addition to the main light source. Fixtures are available with splash proof glass or steel screen faces.

Specifications and Features of RL2 and RL3

  • Main light source uses a mogul base lamp.
  • All fixtures are provided with remote ballasts.
  • Radiation resistant Kapton insulated cabling is standard.
  • Series MS3100 connectors or customer's preference can be provided.
  • Welded construction.
  • Unique design allows light fixture to be mounted over cables or piping that are fixed to the cell wall.
  • Interchangeable hinged faces with quarter-turn manipulator actuated fasteners.
